How to Write a Skimmable, Scannable, & Impactful About Section on LinkedIn

Is your LinkedIn "About" section clear, compelling, and easy to scan, or is it a dense block of text that few will read?

Is your LinkedIn About section skimmable, scannable, and impactful or are there a bunch of paragraphs of black text that very few people may read?

We are inundated with torrents of content every day and visitors to your LinkedIn profile will probably want to skim and scan the content quickly.

Moreover, when they look at your profile on a mobile device, if you have paragraphs, those may take over the entire screen, making reading even more challenging.

So, how can you improve the chances of your story being read? Make it more digestible in smaller bites. Being strategic with pops of color with emojis, bullet points, and white space will make the content easier to consume.

As a job seeker, you might include the following with white space between sections:

Opening sentence or two starting with the key title of the role you are seeking, what industries you have experience in, and areas of experience

(emoji) Strengths include …

(emoji) Known for …

✅ CAREER HIGHLIGHTS (in caps) followed by a bullet-pointed list copied from Word (and not a Google doc because the bullets will look better).

🧊 ICEBREAKERS – TALK TO ME ABOUT, followed by a few emojis of your personal interests.

🎯 CORE COMPETENCIES in a bullet-pointed list of 12-15 keywords in alphabetical order.

You can and should customize the verbiage and format it to fit your needs, background, and experience. Emojis make content much more visually engaging, especially on mobile screens, so feel confident in making your profile uniquely yours!

Show your creativity and thought leadership, and sprinkle with keywords pertinent to you! Have fun!
