KYW Newsradio is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year of keeping residents of the Delaware Valley informed about the many happenings throughout the region, according to a KYW Staff report.
As can be imagined, the last six decades has brought out countless stories.
Some of the happenings throughout the region include tragedies like the Three Mile Island disaster and Hurricane Sandy; nationally tense stories like the 1957 Boy in the Box case and the Bill Cosby trial; and even some happy moments like the Eagles’ Super Bowl LII and LIX wins and the Phillies 2008 World Series win.
KYW Newsradio first came to life on Sept. 21, 1965.
Its “All News, All the Time” format was only the second in the United States, later becoming among the top choices for news listeners throughout the region with close to 1 million listeners tuning in weekly.
However, the radio station dates back to 1921 as the seventh radio station in the country to broadcast.
After getting its start in Chicago, it moved to Philadelphia in 1934.
It remained here until moving to Cleveland in January 1956, then returned to Philly in June 1965.
Over these 60 years, KYW has built a strong standard for its high-level news.
