Hidden in a Northeast Philadelphia basement beneath Secret Circus, Mycopolitan is the city’s first — and only — urban mushroom farm, producing around 1,200 pounds of specialty mushrooms each week, writes Kae Lani Palmisano for Philadelphia Magazine.
The farm was co-founded in 2014 by Tyler Case, Brian Versek, Dan Howling, and Dave Novak, who have since been growing high-quality lion’s mane, enoki, pioppino, black pearls, several varieties of oysters, and other premium mushrooms right here in Philadelphia.
Their products are available on the shelves of several local grocery stores, including Riverwards and Weaver’s Way, on tasting menus throughout the city, and every two weeks through their farm share. They are also available at Fairmount Farmers Market on Thursdays.
The farm grows a total of twelve varieties of mushrooms, but they are seasonal, so not all are available year round.
“But usually, we have at least eight varieties available at any given time, which include lion’s mane, chestnut mushroom, pioppino, king trumpet, golden enoki, coral tooth, blue oyster, shiitake, and more,” said Case.
And for those who want an inside look, tours are available for $95 per person, including a box of mushrooms to take home.
