It’s a Royal Visit As Prince Edward Stops in Philly to Promote Youth Education, Celebrate History

Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, will be making his third visit to Philadelphia on April 30 and May 1 as part of his working royal duties.

Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, will be in Philadelphia on April 30 and May 1 to highlight the city’s youth education and celebrate the historic ties between the United States and Great Britain, writes Zoë Read for WHYY.

Prince Edward previously made two trips to Philadelphia in 2012 and 2018, respectively.

His job as a working royal is to promote the benefits of various forms of education. He also works to support the arts, heritage, and conservation.

The Prince officially began his two-day Philly visit at the Benjamin Rush Garden. There, he celebrated the Bicentennial Bell. The aforementioned bell was a gift from Great Britain and his mother Queen Elizabeth to the United States during her July 1976 visit to the city to mark the American Bicentennial.

The bell has been available for public viewing since last year.

“We were excited to have a member of the Royal Family come to dedicate the garden and the new location of the bell,” said Tom Caramanico, executive director of Independence Historical Trust.

Prince Edward will also hand out awards to teens from Philadelphia Outward Bound School.

He is also set to visit Constitution High School, as well as Philadelphia Youth Basketball and Temple University, respectively.
