“Grown Up Dad,” a show that debuted as a pilot documentary series last year is getting more traction and will be producing a full, five-part season on PBS, writes Peter Crimmins for WHYY.
The series is hosted by Joseph Gidjunis, a photographer and father based in Manayunk, whose idea to start it was sparked by his desire to become a better father to his young son.
“Every time we’re able to show a dad who’s loving their kids and loves being a dad, I feel like I’m countering decades of the bumbling-dad narrative on television,” Gidjunis said.
The aforementioned narrative is usually of a funny and lovable father, who also weren’t very competent.
Gidjunis strives to be different for his 8-year-old son.
“Grown Up Dad” dives into the shifting dynamics of a modern father’s expectations.
On a personal level, Gidjunis thinks about how his own father operated.
While he was a good provider, he was mostly absent. Gidjunis was determined not to continue that cycle when he became a father eight years ago.
Like most fathers, he takes a learn-as-you-go approach and opens up about his journey on the show.
