Comcast NBCUniversal recently announced that it has extended its media rights to air the Olympic Games on its various U.S. platforms through 2036 in a $3 billion deal, writes Robb M. Stewart for The Wall Street Journal.
This deal signifies a broadened relationship between the media and entertainment company, and the International Olympic Committee. It also signifies Comcast NBCUniversal’s evolution from strategic partner to media-rights holder.
Comcast has also extended its media rights to the Olympic Games from 2033 to 2036, which covers both the 2034 Winter Games in Salt Lake City and the 2036 Summer Games, whose location has not yet been determined.
The deal also includes Comcast offering the IOC in-venue distribution of Olympic coverage distribution, digital advertising collaborations, and other support to deliver the games.
NBCUniversal has presented 19 Olympic Games since the 1964 Games in Tokyo.
During the most recent Paris games in 2024, NBCUniversal generated an average of 67 million total viewers a day across all its platforms. This includes broadcast, cable, and streaming. That is a consumption record.
