As the dust has settled from the 2024 Olympics in Paris, it has been reported that 30.6 million on average watched the Olympics, representing an 82 percent increase from the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, writes Hannah Miller for Bloomberg.
The number was calculated on Comcast’s US media outlets, including NBC broadcast network, cable channels like USA, and Peacock.
The closing ceremony on Aug. 11 attracted a U.S. audience of 20.8 million, which more than doubles Tokyo’s closing ceremony.
With Comcast’s goal of using the Olympics as a showcase for Peacock, the service allowed viewers to stream all 329 medal events on demand after their initial airing.
Gold Zone, a daily program that bounced around between live events throughout the Olympics, drew praise from many viewers.
In addition to the overall Games and ceremonies, individual events also performed well.
The U.S. men’s basketball gold medal game against France drew an average audience of 19.5 million. This was the highest for the event since the 1996 Games in Atlanta, when 25.8 million people watched, according to NBC.
The Paris Olympics also outpaced the Tokyo Olympics on BBC streams, Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.
