Mount Airy, One of Philadelphia’s Most Eclectic Enclaves, Offers Something for Everyone

Mount Airy, in the heart of Northwest Philadelphia, offers something for nearly everyone whether you live in the neighborhood or stopping by for a visit.

Mount Airy, in the heart of Northwest Philadelphia, is one of the city’s most eclectic enclaves, offering something for nearly everyone whether you live or visit, writes Sandy Smith for Philadelphia Magazine.

One of the neighborhood’s main hubs, McMenamin’s Tavern has been a local mainstay since 1936. People of all walks of life – young and old, affluent and just getting by, queer and straight, Black, White, and beyond – gather here for lunch or dinner, creating a vibe rarely found in other neighborhood pubs in the city.

The vibrant art scene further enhances Mount Airy’s eclecticism. The Mt. Airy Art Garage serves local youth and focuses primarily on visual arts, while the Allens Lane Art Center – one of the neighborhood’s foundational pillars for its reputation in racial integration – offers both visual and performing arts.

Another beloved local businesses is the Big Blue Marble Bookstore, nestled in Mount Airy Village. It’s also the birthplace of the Weavers Way Co-op, offering everything from produce to furniture across three locations.

Pax Flora Goods on Germantown Avenue specializes in vintage and ethically sourced fashion and home goods.

Meanwhile, Downtime Bakery follows a daily baking schedule, so patrons know exactly when to stop by for their favorite treats fresh from the oven.
