As part of an effort to increase its cell therapy manufacturing, Iovance Biotherapeutics is planning to add hundreds of new jobs at its manufacturing site at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
This would double the company’s current production capacity.
According to Iovance’s interim CEO Fred Vogt, the expansion coincides with the company’s launch of the first approved cell therapy for a solid tumor cancer.
The expansion project also requires the construction of additional manufacturing suites within its existing space at the Navy Yard, which opened in 2021.
In February 2024, Iovance received FDA approval for Amtagvi, its melanoma cell therapy treatment. The treatment works by rejuvenating and multiplying a patient’s tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) cells. That way, the cells can be returned to the patients with an improved ability to identify and battle tumors.
The company remains hard at work to produce cell therapy treatment for other types of solid tumors, as well.
While the current location can supply products for about 2,000 patients annually, the expansion will help increase that number to more than 5,000.
Iovance said the expansion is expected to be complete within the next few years.
