University City District to Seek Funding for $60M Schuylkill River Waterfront Project

University City District will pursue fundraising efforts for the $60 million Schuylkill River Waterfront Project with goals of raising at least $600,000 by the summer.

University City District is currently embarking on fundraising efforts to pursue the Schuylkill River Waterfront Project that was first proposed in spring 2024, writes Paul Schwedelson for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The proposed project features a two-deck structure along the Schuylkill River’s west bank between Market and Chestnut streets. Meanwhile, the lower deck would include amenities, such as a beach, an aquatic marsh, café, and water feature.

According to University City District officials, construction on the project likely won’t begin until 2027 at the earliest. They believe it puts them at an advantage to obtain funding by not having to complete with the multitude of events and projects in connection to the nation’s 250th birthday in 2026.

“This is going to require a team effort,” Sarah Steltz, University City District’s senior vice president of strategy, said. “We’re starting a conversation with [state lawmakers]. I think there was a lot of excitement. People recognize the opportunity associated with the waterfront, and they see what’s been done around waterfronts in other cities. We’re feeling really good about kicking off the fundraising.”

She added that the nonprofit is aiming to raise $600,000 by this summer.
