PATCO has announced that it will finally reopen Franklin Square Station on April 3 after it has been closed for 46 years, writes Mike DeNardo for KYW Newsradio.
The imminent reopening will mark the culmination of several years of planning, construction, and renovations.
In 2022, the Franklin Square Station underwent a $30 million renovation project that will result in a new glass headhouse. The goal is to preserve the original green and white tile featured at train level.
The station has been shuttered since 1979.
While the hope was to open sooner, PATCO General Manager John Rink said that issues involving the escalators and elevators delayed things. It also took additional time to update the safety system, as well as the public address system.
“Tying in all the new systems at the station with our existing and older systems that we have — our communications, our networks, things of that nature,” Rink said.
From now until April 3, it’s all about putting the finishing touches and ensuring that everything in and around the station is at 100 percent and ready for customers.
Franklin Square Station’s reopening will mark PATCO’s first new stop since 1980.
