The Cedars House, a popular cafe in Wissahickon Valley Park, has officially closed its doors permanently, reports Beccah Hendrickson for 6abc.
Its last day in operation was this past Sunday, March 23, and the owner said it was due to the fact that they could no longer afford to stay open as substantial repairs are needed.
The pandemic has led the cost to run the family-owned cafe to double, making it that much more difficult to afford the necessary funds to fix the historic building.
Amy Skarbek, whose sister owns the Cedars House, is emotional of the fact that mom and pop shops are disappearing as it becomes “harder and harder for people to make a living.”
The closing has been a source of shock and sadness for the owners and customers alike.
“I think that’s ridiculous and it’s really going to suck because where am I going to go after my runs on Saturdays and Sundays? I need my coffee and I need my muffin,” said Bud Wilson, a regular from Audubon, New Jersey.
For years, he has run the trail every weekend and then meets his friends at the cafe afterwards.
While this marks the end of a chapter, Skarbek reiterated how much she’s loved her time serving others there.
