The Philadelphia Parking Authority has announced plans to demolish and redevelop a five-story parking garage in Center City, writes Paul Schwedelson for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The Autopark at Jefferson garage, which sits adjacent to Jefferson Health will be turned into a new garage with retail space along Chestnut Street.
The new eight-story garage will be built by Rhode Island-based construction and real estate development company Gilbane.
As of this writing, plans call for the redeveloped structure to have more than 6,500 square feet of ground-floor retail with nothing else above the garage.
PPA spokesperson Martin O’Rourke was quoted as saying that the redevelopment includes “available air space for other development options.”
Given that the site is located within Philadelphia’s least restrictive zone, it allows for a mix of both residential and commercial uses.
O’Rourke added that the existing garage, which was built in 1940, will be demolished and redeveloped because it “has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be completely replaced.”
