The Norristown Area School District reaffirmed its commitment to student safety and inclusion amid growing immigration concerns, writes Rachel Ravina for The Reporter.
Superintendent Christopher Dormer addressed the issue during a recent school board meeting, emphasizing that Norristown schools remain a safe space for all students, regardless of background.
“The Norristown Area School District is proud to reaffirm that our schools are and will remain dedicated to safety, respect, and the inclusion of all students,” Dormer said.
The district’s protocols follow legal guidance after immigration enforcement actions were announced in major cities, including Philadelphia. Under district policy, school officials will not share student information or allow immigration enforcement actions on school grounds without a judicial warrant. Pennsylvania law also prohibits schools from inquiring about a student’s immigration status.
Students and families have voiced concerns over recent developments. Norristown Area High School senior Mariya Morales described a heightened sense of fear among students, with families taking precautions such as carrying copies of birth certificates and legal documents.
Board members stressed the need for immediate communication and education on students’ rights. Plans are in motion to expand “Know Your Rights” assemblies for all students to combat misinformation and ensure community support.
