Renovation of Burk-Bergman Boathouse Preserves Historic Exterior, Modernizes the Interior

Burk-Bergman Boathouse, home to the University of Pennsylvania’s three varsity rowing programs, recently underwent a major renovation.

Burk-Bergman Boathouse, a treasured part of Philadelphia’s historic Boathouse Row and home to the University of Pennsylvania’s three varsity rowing programs, recently underwent a major renovation that preserved its historic exterior while completely modernizing the interior, according to a staff report from Architizer.

One of the oldest boathouses in the country, the building has been struggling to keep pace with the rowing program’s demands, which required doing a comprehensive renovation.

The reconfigured program spaces now boast a soaring entrance lobby and grand hall adorned with trophies and memorabilia, a lounge and meeting area equipped with integrated A/V technology, a historic vaulted ceiling, and a restored balcony that offers panoramic views of the river.

The new ERG room has been expanded to accommodate larger workouts and can be a venue for special events and has been enhanced with skylights that give the space ambient daylight. Meanwhile, the exposed structural system provides a modern interpretation of the boathouse’s historic king post trusses.

The renovation also improved boat storage and maintenance areas, modernized locker rooms and coaches’ spaces, and added new support facilities. There is equal space for men and women athletes, while the new elevator provides ADA access to the second floor.
