Worcester real estate attorney Russell Bryant is suing his alma mater, Temple University over its decision to deactivate alumni email accounts, reports Abraham Gutman for the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Temple recently announced they would deactivate all alumni email accounts more than a year after graduation and that all would be phased out by May 2025.
Bryant has continued to use his @temple.edu address for a decade and has it linked to many key services that he uses professionally. According to Bryant, Temple in breach of contract as their policy at the time of his graduation was lifetime access to the address.
“The whole reason I filed the lawsuit was because I use my Temple email address every single day,” he said.
Bryant filed the lawsuit in Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas earlier this month, looking to keep his email address active. Temple justifies the change citing cyber security issues and industry trends. Ohio State and Florida State have also ended their ‘email for life’ policies.
According to the young attorney, a Temple email address makes a certain statement: “Hey, this is a guy that’s educated. He went to Temple University.”
