U.S. Department of Transportation Awards Philadelphia with Nearly $37M for Two Local Projects

Philadelphia will receive nearly $37 million in federal funding for the Eakins Oval and Schuylkill River Trail projects.

Philadelphia has been selected to receive nearly $37 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation for two local projects, reports Metro Philadelphia.

With the funding, $23.3 million will be used to help transform Eakins Oval and another $13 million will go toward connecting the Schuylkill River Trail from Manayunk to Passyunk.

“This federal funding will improve transportation options and safety, as well as the quality of life for people in Philadelphia and the region,” said U.S. Representative Dwight Evans.

The Benjamin Franklin Parkway will be the design and construction of many improvements, including Eakins Oval. Officials said the improvements will include the implementation of a new traffic pattern, improvements at the intersection and traffic signals, pedestrian connectivity, access improvements for the disabled, bicycle paths, and measures to calm traffic.

Meanwhile, the Schuylkill River Trail project will see the completion of a 39-mile off-road, riverside trail between Pottstown and Southwest Philadelphia. This will be done in an effort to close a critical gap to communities in Southwest Philadelphia that have been historically disadvantaged.
