What is Philadelphia’s Most Competitive Restaurant Concept? New Report Answers That, and More

A new Ondeck Capital report calculates which restaurant concepts are most and least competitive in Philadelphia, and throughout the nation.

Ondeck Capital, a small business lender, has released a new report highlighting the most and least competitive restaurant concepts in the city, writes Joanna Drilling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

This is calculated by the number of restaurants of each type of concept per 100,000 residents. That determines the density of each concept, which is then measured against a national average.

It terms out that Chinese food is the most competitive restaurant concept in Philadelphia, according to the report.

Among Philly’s Chinese cuisine highlights include Han Dynasty in Old City, University City, and Manayunk; Sang Kee Peking Duck in Chinatown; Dim Sum House by Jane G’s in Rittenhouse Square and University City; and China Gourmet in Northeast Philadelphia.

Meanwhile, Mexican cuisine is the least represented in Philly.

Despite this, Mexican cuisine remains quite well-represented. Some notable eateries include Stephen Starr’s El Vez and LMNO; Anejo in Northern Liberties; Chef Dionicio Jimenez’s Cantina La Martina in Kensington; and James Beard winner Cristina Martinez’s South Philly Barbacoa.

Statewide, however, the most competitive dining category in Pennsylvania is Italian. This correlates to the state’s population, as Pennsylvania has the sixth-largest Italian population in the nation.
