Dave Petersen is on a quasi-guerrilla marketing campaign to find a kidney, as a few weeks ago he begged for a kidney while on stage at Kung Fu Necktie and now he is putting up stickers all over South Philadelphia hoping somebody will notice them and respond, writes Ximena Conde for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Newer stickers have his photo and a summary of his condition along with his email. An older version had the name of his band, Hallucinogenic Bulb, as he hoped people would pay more attention.
“I’ve been putting up stickers anywhere and everywhere, completely indiscriminately,” he said. “You never know when one person might feel compelled to reach out, and that person might be the one with the kidney that works best for me.”
Petersen is a 29-year-old musician with polycystic kidney disease. He has been on dialysis since July 2023. Finding a donor through the national waiting list for deceased donors takes between three and five years as demand outpaces supply.
People can live on dialysis for five to 10 years, depending on their health, but Petersen said he does not want to “wither away and die,” and is proactively trying to find a living donor.
He remains hopeful he can find a donor soon.
