26-Year History of the Wing Bowl Will Be Subject of New Documentary

The 26-year history of the Wing Bowl competition in Philadelphia is the subject of a new documentary in the making.

A pair of Philadelphia-based filmmakers are producing a new documentary of the history of the Wing Bowl, writes Hayden Mitman for NBC 10 Philadelphia.

Pat Taggart, one of the filmmakers, attended a Wing Bowl competition in the past and has since become a big of an expert on it.

He joked that the competition is “the most unique event in the history of media.”

Taggart and his filmmaking partner Frank Petka are producing a documentary that looks back at the 26-year history of the Wing Bowl. The idea of the documentary was originally presented by WIP’s Angelo Cataldi, who has led the wing-eating competition for nearly its entire existence.

The title of the documentary is, “No One Died: The Wing Bowl Story.”

According to Taggart, the name comes from something Wing Bowl organizers often say each year.

“Every year they would turn to each other and say ‘thank god no one died,’” said Taggart.

The Wing Bowl initially started as a wing eating competition between two men in the lobby of the Wyndham Franklin Plaza Hotel in 1993. It grew exponentially over the years until its first celebration in 2018.

“We wanted to tell a story that was unique to Philadelphia but could be told to anyone,” Taggart said of the documentary.
