Big Daddy Ray loves rollerskating so much, he travels all the way to Northeast Philadelphia from Norristown, reports Sabrina Iglesias and Erin Reynolds for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Big Daddy Ray, aka Ray Stitt has been an avid skater for years. He is known for his flashy moves, light-up wheels, and high kicks on the rink.
“Back in my day, I used to do a high kick, a double karate kick,” he said. “I still do a kick today; it’s kind of my trademark.”
Stitt makes his way from Norristown to Northeast Philadelphia to skate at the Philly Skateplex on the Roosevelt Boulevard. Devotees of the culture may remember establishment when it was the Rollerskating Palace.
For Big Daddy Ray, it isn’t just about showmanship on the skate rink. It’s about making new friends – or family as he calls them. He and his circle go by the OG Skate Crew. He and fellow skater OG Smooth are always looking for new members.
”Skate family is huge here,” he said. “It’s almost like a big family reunion.”
Equipped with mobile floodlights and a camera, they hype up fellow skaters and promote the culture.
