The community-driven efforts of Second Wind Bicycles have resulted in hundreds of refurbished bicycles, writes Emily Neil for WHYY.
Founded in 2021 by Zac Gery, the nonprofit organization aims to alleviate transportation challenges in Montgomery, Berks, and Bucks counties.
Gery launched Second Wind Bicycles after recognizing a significant gap in bicycle access across the region.
“Local organizations consistently reported a need for bicycles,” Gery noted. What began with 60 repaired bikes in its first year has escalated to 650 in 2023, with projections to distribute up to 800 bikes this year.
The organization relies on a dedicated team of 14 volunteers to refurbish donated and abandoned bikes, keeping repair costs under $50 to ensure affordability.
These bicycles are then provided to individuals experiencing homelessness, participants in recovery programs, and residents needing a reliable commute option.
