Horse Co-owned By Former World Series Champion Phillie Wins 2024 Belmont Stakes

Jayson Werth got into horse racing in 2021, and purchased Dornoch the horse in 2022. Two years later, the horse has earned his co-owners a cut of $1.2 million.

Dornoch, a horse co-owned by former Philadelphia Phillie and World Series champion Jayson Werth, won the 2024 Belmont Stakes on Saturday, writes Jack Baer for Yahoo! Sports.

The horse overcame challenging odds to push through the pack and break his 17-to-1 odds to be victorious.

Dornoch, moved to the front early on in the race and battled it out with co-favorite Seize the Grey until Dornoch went ahead for good after the final turn.

With the win, Werth and horse’s other co-owners will earn $1.2 million in prize money.

When asked how Dornoch’s win compared to winning a World Series with the Phillies in 2008, Werth found them comparable.

“I would put it right up there with winning at the biggest stage,” he said. “Horse racing is the most underrated sport in the world, bar none. It’s the biggest game, you’ve got the Derby, the Preakness, the Belmont. We just won the Belmont. This is as good as it gets in horse racing, this is as good as it gets in sports.”

Werth got into horse racing in 2021 a few years after retiring from the MLB, and ended up buying into Dornoch by chance in 2022.

That investment has surely paid off.
