Cantina La Martina is one of Philadelphia’s best Mexican restaurants and will soon embark on its latest expansion venture, writes Jason Sheehan for Philadelphia Magazine.
The restaurant’s owners has announced that they will be taking over the trolley car space at 2217 Frankford Avenue, and are turning it into La Placita Fishtown.
The Fishtown community and the New Kensington Community Development Corporation basically hand-picked Cantina La Martina for this spot.
The plan is to operate a food concession stand, serve Puerto Rican street food Thursdays through Sundays, and then use the rest of the space for collaborations and community programming.
Cantina La Martina previously opened a La Placita at the Cherry Street Pier, where owner Dionicio Jiménez and his team feature Mexican street food, Puerto Rican chinchoreo favorites, and ice cream.
Jiménez and his wife, Mariangeli Alicea Saez, has had other forays into the food scene, as well.
Earlier this year, the couple announced plans to open La Baja in Ambler.
The 30-seat eatery experiments with a fusion of Mexican, Mediterranean, and Asian cuisine.
