By

Maryann Nazareth, a student at Downingtown STEM Academy, has earned a National Merit Corporate Scholarship, making her one of the most elite scholars in the nation, writes Justin Heinze for Patch.

Nazareth, a Chester Springs resident, plans to study medicine. She won the National Merit Cencora Scholarship.

Only 770 students nationwide were honored with corporate sponsorships, with 33 in Pennsylvania and others in Chester County. They were chosen from a pool of around 1.6 million high school juniors, which was then narrowed down to around 16,000 semifinalists.

The awards are between 500 to $10,000 per year for undergraduate studies.

The corporate sponsorships often pertain to students who are children of their employees, residents in the community, or are planning to study in fields that the company encourages.
