Shayla Smith has been making headlines over the past year-plus for her tremendous basketball skills as a high school junior.

The girl’s basketball team at Universal Audenried Charter High School in Grays Ferry is enduring a historic season, led by junior Shayla Smith, reports Christie Ileto for 6abc.

The 11th-grade MVP is a scoring sensation, breaking numerous records, and helping the team accomplish feats it has never seen before.

Namely, the team at Universal Audenried reached the semifinal round for the first time in the school’s history.

Smith is leading the charge, as she was recently named Pennsylvania MaxPreps High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

“First time winning a city championship and second time winning the public league,” Smith said. “This season we made it real far into the states.”

While Smith has been dominating on the court since her sophomore year — becoming the fastest player in Public League history to reach 1,000 points — her main focus is having fun.

“Throughout the season, I wasn’t thinking about getting 1000 points,” she said. “Next year I am probably going to have 2,000.”

Her coach, Kevin Slaughter, praises her work ethic and desire to practice and play basketball every day.

That work ethic is what has led to the team’s historic season and Smith continues to leave her mark and create a legacy within the school’s basketball program.
