African American Museum in Philadelphia To Hold First-Ever ‘King Legacy Oratorical Contest’ on April 20

The King Legacy Oratorical Contest encourages students to dig deep within themselves and create the kind of change they wish to see in society.

The African American Museum in Philadelphia has announced its first-ever “King Legacy Oratorical Contest.”

The new initiative encourages students to dig deep within themselves and create the kind of change they wish to see in society.

It extends on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but within the students’ own present realities.

Students will prepare an original 3-5 minute speech responding to an open-ended question, centered around one of three quotes by Dr. King for a chance to win prizes to fuel their continuing education, personal goals, or creative endeavors.

The prizes are three tiered scholarships — first place gets $2,000; second place gets $1,000; and third place gets $500.

The educational and expressive competition is open to graduating high school seniors throughout the region, who will fortify and reignite the themes illuminated in Dr. King’s lifetime of work throughout their own unique perspective and voice.

The inaugural “King Legacy Oratorical Contest” will take place Saturday, April 20, 2024 at the Jack T. Franklin Auditorium at the African American Museum in Philadelphia.
