103-Year-Old Pioneering Doctor and Entrepreneur Offers Tips to Successful Life
Dr. Gladys McGarey, who is 103 years old, joined the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in September 1941, not long before the United States entered World War II.
As one of the few women who practiced medicine at that time, she had to deal with unique challenges and dismissive attitudes while she worked in hospitals, writes Amanda Breen for Entrepreneur.
Despite this, she ultimately opened her own practice with her then-husband in Wellsville, Ohio, in an era when women could not have their own bank accounts. She also helped pioneer the holistic medicine movement in the country, and co-founded the American Holistic Medical Association.
Her main tip for a successful life is to find your “juice.”
“The juice is our reason for living,” she said. “It’s our fulfillment, our joy. It’s what happens when life is activated by love. It’s the energy we get from the things that matter and mean something to us.”
She also believes that love is the most powerful form of medicine.
“Love truly is the greatest medicine the world has ever known,” said McGarey. “It takes life from a passive state (being alive) to an active state (truly living).”
