When the owners of Termini Bros. announced it was renovating its floors over the summer, it provided an opportunity for customers to take home a piece of history, writes Ali Mohsen for Billy Penn at WHYY

For over 70 years, the South Philadelphia bakery has been a place where generations of Philadelphians and visitors come. Therefore, it’s filled with memories for many.

Beyond the selection of desserts and pastries on its menu, Termini Bros. is known for its iconic black and white floor tiles.

When interior renovation plans were announced, a slew of customers inquired, expressing interest in keeping pieces of the tiles as a souvenir.

As those requests continued coming in, owners Joseph and Vincent Termini Jr. held a giveaway.

The long line of customers outside the bakery represented an intergenerational construct of people who have memories of from just a few years to several decades.

Some even drove from out of state.

“This is the floor that my dad stood on, like, once a month,” said Liz Fratoni MacIntyre. “I’m going to treasure that tile … I’m going to frame it and hang it someplace with honor.”

This was a sentiment shared by many.
