The Clay Studio Brings Urban Ceramics To Life in Philadelphia

In 2022, The Clay Studio moved into its new building and is sure to catch the eye of those who walk by, writes Sarah Archer for Metropolis.

Located on North American Street in Olde Kensington, the new space is a result of a years-long collaborative design process between neighbors, potters, architects, and art administrators.

Jennifer Martin, executive director of the organization, noted that its previous venue wasn’t set up to house the new direction of the organization.

“The old building just wasn’t set up for artists to move their work in and out, it was not modern or updated, it was definitely not accessible,” she said.

Its new location, designed by local architecture firm, Digsau, has helped The Clay Studio turn into a world-class urban ceramics studio.

The new space has already started paying dividends for its residents.

Adebunmi Gbadedo and Roberto Lugo are two such individuals who can attest to the impact The Clay Studio has had on them, and can have on others.

“This program is so important to the city as it provides an opportunity for people who would otherwise never be able to work with clay, to have access to it in their schools,” said Lugo.
