Reading Terminal Market is will be undergoing many renovations as it prepares for an influx of visitors for America’s 250th birthday celebrations, writes Tom Dougherty for CBS News Philadelphia.
More than 5,000 square feet of communal space within the historic market will see renovations.
This includes more modern and ADA-accessible seating, new flooring, increased dining space, and various structural enhancements.
“Our public seating areas are showing the wear and tear that comes from hosting millions of visitors each year,” Annie Allman, CEO and general manager of the Reading Terminal Market Corporation, said in a press release. “As Philadelphia’s most visited public space, we want to make sure our guests have a comfortable and safe dining experience and are confident this project will better serve our guests while making our housekeeping team’s job a bit easier.”
Reading Terminal Market expects to welcome more than 6 million guests this year as the city prepares to celebrate America’s semiquincentennial and host several major sporting events, like the FIFA World Cup and MLB All-Star Game, respectively.
Renovations are expected to begin in the spring and completed by the summer.
