With more than 500,000 tourists expected in Philadelphia for the World Cup games, pressure is mounting to extend the state’s 2 a.m. alcohol curfew at bars and restaurants, writes Michael Tanenbaum for PhillyVoice.
Ben Fileccia, senior vice president of strategy and engagement at the Pennsylvania Restaurant and Lodging Association, said that Philadelphia needs to remain competitive with other host cities, including New York and Miami, where alcohol service is permitted until 4 a.m. or later.
“We know people are going to be coming from all over the world, and their drinking schedule doesn’t necessarily stop at 2 a.m.,” he added. “I would much prefer that liquor is being sold and provided by businesses that do this on a regular basis and know how to protect their guests.”
Any temporary changes to Philadelphia bar’s curfew hour would have to be authorized by state law.
Six World Cup matches, including one on the Fourth of July, will be held at Lincoln Financial Field. The international soccer tournament coincides with a busy summer, placing Philadelphia among the top global travel destinations. Estimates suggest the city will see at least one million international travelers in 2026.
