Introduction to Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology has revolutionized the approach to cardiovascular diseases, particularly in the management of acute coronary syndromes, such as ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). This specialized field combines advanced imaging techniques and minimally invasive procedures to effectively treat heart conditions. At Roxborough Memorial Hospital, we are committed to providing state-of-the-art care in our catheterization (Cath) lab, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Understanding STEMI

STEMI is a critical condition characterized by the complete blockage of a coronary artery, leading to significant heart muscle damage. Timely recognition and treatment of STEMI are crucial, as every minute counts in restoring blood flow and minimizing heart damage.

Symptoms of STEMI:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating, nausea, or lightheadedness
  • Pain radiating to the arms, neck, back, or jaw

The Role of the Cath Lab

The Cath lab is the cornerstone of interventional cardiology, equipped with advanced imaging technology that allows for real-time visualization of the heart and blood vessels. This facility plays a vital role in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular conditions through procedures such as:

  • Coronary Angiography: A diagnostic procedure to visualize blood flow through the coronary arteries.
  • Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI): Also known as angioplasty, this procedure involves the insertion of a stent to open blocked arteries and restore blood flow.

STEMI Protocols at Roxborough Memorial Hospital

At Roxborough Memorial Hospital, we have established a comprehensive STEMI protocol that emphasizes rapid diagnosis and treatment. Our approach includes:

1. Early Detection:

  • Emergency department teams are trained to quickly identify STEMI symptoms.
  • Use of electrocardiograms (ECGs) to confirm the diagnosis.

2. Timely Activation of the Cath Lab:

  • Once STEMI is confirmed, the Cath lab team is alerted immediately.
  • Our goal is to initiate PCI within 90 minutes of the patient’s arrival at the hospital.

3. Advanced Treatment:

  • During PCI, we utilize cutting-edge technology to ensure optimal results.
  • Continuous monitoring and care during and after the procedure to manage any complications.

4. Post-Procedure Care:

  • Patients receive comprehensive follow-up care, including medication management and lifestyle counseling to prevent future cardiac events.

The Importance of Patient Education

Patient education is paramount in managing heart health. We encourage our patients to understand their conditions, treatment options, and the importance of lifestyle changes. Key elements include:

  • Healthy Diet: Emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
  • Regular Exercise: Encouraging physical activity tailored to individual capabilities.
  • Medication Adherence: Understanding prescribed medications and their importance in preventing future cardiovascular events.

Accepting New Patients

As an interventional cardiologist at Roxborough Memorial Hospital, I am dedicated to providing personalized care to each patient. I am currently accepting new patients and invite anyone experiencing symptoms or requiring cardiac evaluations to schedule an appointment.

To schedule an appointment, please call 610-290-4270.
