Norwegian Cruise Line’s arrival in April at the newly built PhilaPort Cruise Terminal in Tinicum Township is generating conversations among cruisers, writes Nusreta Beranac for Cruise Critic.
Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Pearl will operate seven-to-nine-day itineraries departing from the Terminal. Destinations include Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard and Charleston, South Carolina.
About 41 calls per year are scheduled from the 16-acre Tinicum homeport.
Early reactions on Cruise Critic message boards to the promise of cruise access to the Mid-Atlantic through the new Terminal have ranged from cautiously optimistic to skeptical.
“Thrilled to see cruises from Philly. The Jewel class seems great for a port like Philly. Not sure any larger ships would work sailing down the Delaware River,” said PhillyTravelBug.
There were also concerns about height restrictions and parking, as far as providing a secure and safe lot for passengers.
“Right now they have nothing,” Laszlo wrote.
Reddit users, meanwhile, praised the terminal’s convenient location as a draw, with the ability to take an Uber to the terminal the same as if they were catching a flight.
Others were concerned about the environmental impact and whether the Delaware River could accommodate modern cruise ships.
