It has been nearly 100 years since Myer “Spike” Shandelman founded Spike’s Trophies.
The Philadelphia-based company has been able to survive this long due to its ability to modernize it, writes Holly Quinn for Technical.ly.
Over these many decades, Spike’s Trophies has evolved from a traditional hand-engraving shop into a tech-driven company that benefits organizations across the region.
“The technology obviously has changed,” said Ted Westervelt, one of Spike’s three owners. “I’ve been in this business since 1992. I remember when a fax machine was pretty cool.”
Spike’s has its production facility located in Northeast Philadelphia, while its storefront is in Center City.
The company now has digital printing, AI tools, and lasers that help support workflow efficiency.
While the company may be known for its trophies, that’s just a fraction of its services. Its offerings also include full-service promotional products, including medals, apparel, pins, and other branded items for businesses, nonprofits, community organizations, schools, and more.
Spike’s has also become bit synonymous with the city’s sports community and history.
A space inside its facility is dedicated to the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, which uses it for meetings, storage, and private viewing.
Even as it approaches it 100th birthday in a few years, the company is continuing to evolve.
