The Philadelphia region could see an estimated $1 billion of economic impact in 2026 from the surge in tourism that is being driven by some of the world’s largest events, writes Mike D’Onofrio for AXIOS Philadelphia.
Over one million visitors are projected to attend 22 events in Philadelphia and the surrounding area this year, including World Cup matches and PAX Unplugged, a tabletop gaming convention, according to the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau. Those attending are expected to spend roughly $950 million in the metro region.
The region’s leading international tourism agency is also forecasting 1.5 million overnight visits, not including the more than 200 additional meetings, conventions, and sporting events scheduled for this year.
The biggest draw will be the six World Cup matches at Lincoln Financial Field, expected to attract 450,000 visitors, followed by the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club at 200,000, MLB All-Star Week with 100,000 attendees, the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament an estimated 60,000, the Northeast Volleyball Qualifier around 59,500, and PAX Unplugged at 42,000.
“The concentration of major events in 2026 will drive visitor spending, support hospitality jobs and put Philadelphia in front of national and global audiences,” said Gregg Caren, president and CEO of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau.
