Dock Mennonite Makes $1.5M Land Play in Montgomery County

Dock Mennonite Academy expands its Hatfield campus with a $1.53M farm purchase, opening the door to future athletic and academic uses.

A longtime Montco private school is expanding its footprint with a notable land purchase in Hatfield, writes Ryan Mulligan for The Philadelphia Business Journal.

Dock Mennonite Academy has acquired a neighboring 4.5-acre farm property at 1850 Tomlinson Road in Hatfield for $1.53 million, giving the school additional room to grow while preserving open space next to its high school campus. The property includes a nearly 5,000-square-foot farmhouse dating back to 1800, along with a barn and space suitable for a workshop.

The land was previously owned by Ken and Frances Clemens, members of the family behind Hatfield-based Clemens Food Group. School leaders say a longstanding relationship with the Clemens family helped make the off-market opportunity possible.

Superintendent Jason Moyer said recent enrollment growth put the school in a strong financial position to pursue strategic real estate opportunities. Community members have already floated ideas for the site, including expanded athletic fields, career and technical education programs, an adult learning space, or housing for international students and faculty.

The more than 70-year-old school serves about 640 students across its Montgomery County campuses and continues to draw families from a wide range of Christian denominations.
