The workforce has undergone a dramatic evolution since the pandemic, marked by seismic shifts in employee expectations, organizational priorities, and the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI).

Each year has earned a defining label, reflecting the cultural and emotional state of workers as they navigated unprecedented change.

Together, these trends tell a powerful story about how work, and the workers who keep organizations running, have transformed.

The journey began with 2021’s Great Resignation, when millions voluntarily left their jobs in pursuit of meaning, flexibility, and better working conditions.

This mass reevaluation of priorities continued into 2022’s Great Reshuffle, a year defined by career pivots, industry switches, and a widespread desire for alignment between personal values and professional roles.

But momentum shifted in 2023, known as The Great Gloom, a period marked by burnout, dwindling morale, and growing mental health concerns across the workforce.

By 2024, as economic uncertainty grew, employees sought stability, giving rise to The Great Stay, in which workers chose to remain in their roles while cautiously preparing for future opportunities.

However, 2025 introduced a new challenge: The Great Mismatch, highlighting a widening skills gap between employer expectations and job seeker capabilities, especially as AI and automation accelerated.

Workers are increasingly facing pressure to upskill and reskill, while companies struggle to find talent with the necessary digital and AI competencies.

Looking ahead, experts predict 2026 will be “The Great Convergence,” a pivotal year where human capability, AI integration, skills-first hiring, and modern work models finally align.

This convergence represents not just adaptation but transformation, ushering in a new era in which continuous learning, AI fluency, structured hybrid work, and portfolio-style careers become standard.
