SEPTA has opened its renovated $50 million Wissahickon Transit Center in Manayunk after major construction work that has been taking place over more than two years, writes Michaela Althouse for PhillyVoice.
The new state-of-the-art facility is more than six times bigger than the former facility, and now includes upgraded lighting, signs, benches, bike racks, security cameras, and sheltered waiting areas.
Now serving 11 bus routes at Ridge Avenue and Kelly Drive, the new facility is also fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, featuring separate boarding spaces for people with disabilities.
With roughly 5,000 riders passing through each weekday, the Wissahickon Transit Center is among the SEPTA’s busiest stations, particularly outside Center City.
In addition to the construction on the transit center itself, the project also included a widening of Ridge Avenue. This was to make space for a bus-only, left-turn lane.
Overall, the new upgrades are expected to help riders improve their waiting experience, make connections, and bus drivers with added amenities.
