Bucks County Median Homebuyer Age Well Below National Average

The median homebuyer age in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metropolitan area, which includes Bucks County, well below national average.

According to a nationwide survey by the National Association of Realtors, the median homebuyer age in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metropolitan area, which includes Bucks County, is well below the national average, writes Jess Rohan for the Bucks County Courier Times.

The survey found that the median homebuyer overall in the United States is 59 years old, while the average age of first-time homebuyers has risen to 40 from their twenties in the 1980s.

Data for Greater Philadelphia, however, presents a more favorable picture, with a median homebuyer age of 38. The Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton metro area, next to Bucks County, is above the national average, with 50 being the median age for homebuyers.

Detailed data for Bucks County is not yet available, but U.S. Census figures suggest that the ages of heads of household, now and when they purchased their homes, show that homebuyers in Bucks County are older than in previous decades.

From 2021 through part of 2023, about 29 percent of heads of household moving into owner-occupied properties were under 35, 55 percent were between 35 and 64, and 17 percent were 65 or older.

In 2000, meanwhile, individuals younger than 35 accounted for 34 percent of recent home purchases.
