Maya Nazareth, the Philadelphia entrepreneur and founder of Alchemize Fightwear, recently made an appearance on hit show ABC show, Shark Tank, writes Earl Hopkins for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
While there, she pitched her women’s sports apparel company to “sharks” Daymond John, Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner, Kendra Scott, and guest investor Alexis Ohanian.
Nazareth appeared on the show seeking a $250,000 investment in exchange for a 5 percent stake in the company.
While the “sharks” were hesitant about the price tag and competition from major apparel and retail companies, Nazareth responded by defending her brand’s strong social media engagement and $1.8 million in lifetime sales.
This led to a series of counter offers until Ohanian, Greiner, and Scott joined forces for a $300,000 offer in exchange for a 15 percent stake in the company. The stake would be split equally among the three investors.
“We’re about to build a world-class community in movement for the fighter in every woman,” Nazareth said after landing the deal on-screen.
She added that she plans to use the money to increase her marketing and continue amplifying the brand.
Nazareth started the company in 2020 after noticing a lack of womenswear options in combat training. She, herself, has a passion for Jiu-Jitsi.
