Beware the Ghosts of Old Habits

This Halloween, confront the real ghosts haunting your leadership — fear, distraction, and old habits — and learn how self-awareness turns them into growth.

Halloween reminds us that fear often comes dressed in costumes. Sometimes, it looks obvious — a horror-movie villain jumping out of the dark. Other times, it’s quieter, harder to see, and far more unsettling. In leadership and life, the scariest things aren’t outside forces. They’re the hidden patterns within us that quietly haunt our decisions.

Maybe it’s the ghost of procrastination, always whispering that you can wait until tomorrow. Or the ghost of distraction, pulling your attention away from what matters most. For many leaders, it’s the ghost of old habits — replaying the same routines, excuses, and patterns that keep them stuck in place. These aren’t imaginary. They’re real barriers, and they quietly drain focus, energy, and growth.

This is where self-leadership mastery becomes your flashlight. When you bring awareness to the shadows — to the places you’ve been running on auto-pilot — you see what’s really there. And once you see it, you can choose differently.

That’s the A-Game advantage. Your A-Game is clear, purposeful, and courageous. It acknowledges fear but doesn’t bow to it. By contrast, the B-Game is reactive. It avoids, deflects, and hides in the dark. The choice between the two is the choice between growth and stagnation.

If you want to break free from what’s haunting you, start by naming it. Fear is far less intimidating once it has a shape. Then, instead of running from it, turn toward it and ask yourself the Central Question: “What choice can I make and what action can I take in this moment to create the greatest net value?” Even a small, intentional step forward shifts the balance — and suddenly the “monster” becomes manageable.

The irony of fear is that it loses power the moment you face it. What once seemed terrifying becomes manageable, even motivating. And those ghosts of old habits? They only haunt you if you let them. The moment you shine a light on them and choose your A-Game response, they fade into the past where they belong.

So, this season, don’t let the ghosts of old habits run your leadership — step into your A-Game and finish the year stronger than ever. Learn more at Achievable.com.
