University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School will be launching a new fellowship called the Dr. Sadie T.M. Alexander Post-Graduate Fellowship, in honor of the pioneer who was one of the first Black women to earn a a Ph.D. in economics, writes Racquel Williams for KYW Newsradio.
The announcement comes about a month after the school suspended its previous scholarship program named after the law school’s first Black female graduate.
After its suspension, Penn Carey Law School received a lot of backlash and for rolling back its diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
However, the school promotes the new fellowship for strengthening its commitment to access to innovative and interdisciplinary legal education.
Philadelphia Councilmember Jamie Gauthier said she feels this move is a step in the right direction. Though she believes more can be done about DEI.
“This feels like a response, and I think it’s a good thing. I also, though, want to see the entire university reinstate its DEI programs and go even further to ensure that there is equity at the university, that there is inclusion at the university,” Gauthier said. “That’s what makes institutions better.”
