Since the pandemic, Philadelphia-area home cleaners have seen demand surge, which is being driven in part by the growing number of millennial clients, writes Erin McCarthy for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Fabiana Pons, owner of Fabi’s Cleaning Services, said that despite cleaning over a dozen homes a day alongside her crew, the demand is so high that they have to turn down some requests. While summer is usually slow, this year was as busy as ever.
“People are working so hard,” she said. “They have no time or energy. And some people just don’t like cleaning.”
According to several local residential cleaners, the rise in customers in their twenties and thirties represents a shift from previous decades. Their clients also include singles, dual-income households, parents, and child-free households.
When Warren Weiss, owner of Scrub! Cleaning, was starting his business in 2008, young people seldom used his services, and he was usually told to contact their older, wealthier relatives.
“People would be like, ‘Oh, you know, I have a really wealthy aunt, and she’s looking for somebody,’” he said. Now, “it’s become almost like a utility. Everybody has a house cleaner, especially in the city.”
