Healthy cooking and eating at an early age can pay huge dividends for children as they become adults, and a Philadelphia summer camp is helping kids do just that, writes Stephanie Stahl and Brad Nau for CBS News Philadelphia.
At Vetri Cooking Lab at Mastery Charter School in South Philadelphia, students are getting the opportunity to learn about healthy cooking and gain hands-on food education.
Through its “Recipe for Summer Stability” initiative, the goal is to provide safe and structured activity surrounding food that is both fun and empowering.
“We want to provide the education that will help us make … really thoughtful decisions about food,” said Vetri Community Partnership CEO Maddy Booth.
In underserved communities, healthy eating can be challenging, which often leads to higher rates of obesity and diabetes.
This camp helps teach the younger generation about the importance of healthy eating.
All the recipes learned come with measurements and cooking instructions.
The free camp runs at 12 locations throughout Philadelphia and run through the summer.
The classes run for students from third through 12th grade.
