Gov. Shapiro Talks Willingness to Work with Eagles Over Stadium, Bringing NASCAR to Philly

Gov. Josh Shapiro said he will continue discussions with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie over what support he may need regarding the team’s stadium. HE also hopes to bring NASCAR to Philadelphia.

Without going into specifics about any potential state funding for new sports arenas in Pennsylvania, Gov. Josh Shapiro said that he will continue discussions with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and the Rooney family in Pittsburgh over what support they may need regarding their stadiums, writes Dan Gelston for the Associated Press.

The Eagles do not own Lincoln Financial Field, and their current lease is set to expire in 2032. The team will need to decide on whether to renew the lease or instead build a new stadium. Lurie has already said he feels torn about the decision, especially since the Linc is where the Eagles have raised two Super Bowl championship banners.

However, if the team chooses to pursue a new stadium, it is not guaranteed to receive state funding. Shapiro had already said he would not provide state funds for the 76ers’ proposed new arena when it was under consideration last year.

Shapiro also expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of bringing NASCAR to Philadelphia for a race inside Franklin Field.

“There’s some conversations,” he said. “First and foremost, we don’t want to do anything that undermines Pocono. … The more NASCAR the better.”
