It’s no secret that spending hours at a time inside a mascot costume can be a hot, sweaty ordeal.
Speaking of mascots, the Phillie Phanatic recently revealed his secret to surviving these hot summer months, writes Dan Gelston for AP News.
Tom Burgoyne, who brings the Phillie Phanatic to life, used to use Febreze and Lysol to help keep stench from being overwhelmed.
However, these days he has found a more interesting alternative.
Now, he orders off the happy hour menu — specifically vodka and water — to feel fresh and clean during these hot, summer days.
“You put it in half-and-half, maybe a third vodka, the rest water, you put it in a squeegee bottle and you can spray your head that way and sometimes that takes the smell away,” Burgoyne said.
Beyond that, however; the Phanatic also engages in frequent breaks every 20 or 30 minutes, consistent hydration, appropriate ventilation, and cooling materials to survive the heat.
Beloved by Phillies fans, many have sent cooling vests in the mail to the Phillie Phanatic, as well as cooling collars to help combat heat exhaustion.
Ask Burgoyne when the best weather days after, it’s October when the Phillies are in the playoffs.
“That is the ideal time,” he concluded.
