Meet the North Philadelphia Native, Temple University Freshman Aiming to Change Lives

North Philadelphia native and Temple freshman George Lane is committed to bettering his community by showing he doesn't have to leave it in order to do so.

George Lane is one of the representatives of Temple University’s largest freshman class ever.

As a North Philadelphia native, he is eager to stay in the community he calls home and aims to change lives for the better, writes Wakisha Bailey for CBS News Philadelphia.

“It’s common to see people say they want to fight for change, and they end up leaving and giving up on the community, and that is something I really don’t want to do,” Lane said.

For Lane, choosing Temple was a no brainer because it’s so close to home.

He plans to enter into the school’s nursing program with dreams to become a cancer research doctor.

Those dreams were inspired by his two deceased brothers. One passed away from desmoplastic sarcoma, while the other was a victim of gun violence.

Lane is also one of two Gates Scholars entering Temple’s freshman class, which helps cover all his costs at Temple as he is also the first in his family to attend college.

While this is just the start of his college experience, he is already setting sights on bigger things.

He hopes to eventually go to medical school and work at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
