Just days after being posthumously inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Philadelphia Phillies great Dick Allen received a new mural in South Philadelphia, writes Emily Neil for WHYY.
Allen’s family, representatives from Mural Arts Philadelphia, elected officials, Phillies representatives, and fans alike all gathered for the official mural unveiling.
During the mural dedication on Saturday, August 2, Allen’s widow Willa paid tribute to her late husband, calling him “bigger than life.”
Former Mayor Jim Kenney, who worked with Mural Arts and the Phillies to create the artwork, also provided remarks during the mural dedication.
“First time I met Dick Allen, I was star struck,” Kenney said. “He was one of my favorite players, talented, electrifying and a genuine superstar. In my eyes, what struck me the most was that he was humble, kind, soft spoken. He treated everyone with respect and carried himself with quiet dignity. It was clear he wasn’t just a great ball player, he was a true gentleman.”
Allen faced many challenges throughout his career, but he was beloved by many Phillies fans.
In September 2020, the Phillies retired his No. 15 jersey, months before he passed away in December 2020.
The new mural was created by artist Ernel Martinez and is on display at 2227 South Broad Street.
