Whether you prefer inventive mixology, seasonal specialties, or rediscovered classics, Philadelphia’s cocktail scene satisfies every preference, with some spots standing out for their exceptional concoctions, write Jenn Ladd, Kiki Aranita, Craig LaBan, and Matt Buchanan for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

At a.bar, mixed drinks combine minimalist presentation with nuanced complexity. Standouts include the signature Improved Whiskey Cocktail, a mid-19th century variation featuring absinthe and maraschino liqueur, and the Fish House Punch, a classic refreshed with smoky lapsang souchong tea, peppercorn amaro, and kombu tincture.

Located above the omakase room of Ogawa in Old City, Almanac has become a top cocktail destination in Philadelphia, featuring seasonally inspired drinks shaped by Japanese cocktail traditions. Its version of Philly Fish House Punch takes an herbal, ethereal turn with cucumbers, yuzu juice, and curry leaves, with ingredients changing depending on the season.

Andra Hem, Philadelphia’s most Instagrammable cocktail bar, which ironically lacks an Instagram account of its own, features a somewhat wacky cocktail list. Highlights include The Red Hatorade, similar to a Nordic negroni made with aquavit, and the Crunch Daddy, which blends bourbon, rye, amaretto, and bitters with Cap’n Crunch.

Meanwhile, Bar Palmina offers non-alcoholic alternatives for mixed drinks, including recreations of modern classics such as the Penicillin and the Jungle Bird, as well as originals like the Maiz-calle.
